Energy industry simulations

The HPC4E project aims to apply the new exascale HPC techniques to energy industry simulations, customizing them, and going beyond the state-of-the-art in the required HPC exascale simulations for different energy sources: wind energy production and design, efficient combustion systems for biomass-derived fuels (biogas), and exploration geophysics for hydrocarbon reservoirs.
The HPC4E Consortium consists of 13 partners, 7 from Europe and 6 from Brazil, with different organizational cultures (universities, research centres, supercomputing facilities and industry) that contribute to the project with complementary expertise. The management structure for the project is designed to provide an appropriate level of professional management to mediate efficiently between the different interests and cultures of the partners, and it is based on well-known best practice methodologies.

Research for the HPC


Wind power is the renewable energy source with the widest and most successful deployment over the past 20 years, going from 3 GW to 200 GW of global installed capacity in that period of time.


We want to enhance the use of HPC to investigate alternative fuels prior to conducting expensive experiments and develop numerical tools that can be applied with confidence to assess the performance of new fuels in practical systems.


Geophysical exploration for finding and monitoring hydrocarbon reservoirs relies heavily on processing large amounts of data.

HPC for Energy The HPC for Energy project is proud to present a short video on the challenges that our society faces in energy production and consumption and how exascale supercomputing helps to address them.

Work packages, deliverables and milestones

The objectives of the project will be achieved through activities organized in seven workpackages. Each workpackage has a European and a Brazilian coordinator.

WP1 Project Management

WP1 Project management deals with the administrative and financial management of the project, including the monitoring and assessment of the quality of the project outcomes.

WP2 Disruptive Exascale Computer Architectures

 This WP will group all the porting, tuning and testing efforts of the different simulations codes in the new proposed exascale computer architectures.

WP3 Simulators for Exascale Computations

This transversal work package aims at introducing innovative computational algorithms well suited to the numerical simulation of complex phenomena on exascale architectures.

WP4 Atmosphere for Energy

This WP will deploy the complete applications required to design, optimize and forecast production of wind farms. 

WP5 Biomass for Energy

This WP will deploy the complete applications required to high-fidelity combustion simulations of biomass-derived fuels.

WP6 Geophysics for Energy

This WP deploy the complete applications and workflows required for exploration geophysics.

WP7 Dissemination and Exploitation

This WP will take care of all dissemination and exploitation activities.
