Towards Energy-Efficient Storage Servers

HPC4E researcher Vinícius Machado (UFRGS) contributed to the The 32nd ACM SIGAPP Symposium On Applied Computing, held in Marrakech (Morocco), from the 4th to the 6th of April with a work titled Towards Energy-Efficient Storage Servers

HPC4E contributed on a research where the goal was to evaluate the energy efficiency and the performance of ARM-based parallel file system data servers, aiming to use them as a low-power alternative to common data servers. A comparison was made between the use of two Cubietrucks against a single desktop machine, running a benchmark exploring multiple accesss patterns on both of the architectures. The results suggest that using the two Cubietrucks is a viable alternative when it comes to read-intensive workloads but we would have to increase the number of Cubietrucks to 3 or 4 for write-intensive workloads in order to have good trade-offs.
